The house was finally quiet.

Not perfectly clean. Not fully caught up. There were still dishes in the sink and laundry waiting to be folded somewhere down the hall. But for the first time all day, no one needed anything from Maddy.

She stood at the kitchen window with a cup of tea she had reheated twice already and watched the evening light settle softly across the yard.

Normally, she would’ve filled the silence—picked up her phone, started another task, found something productive to do.

But this time, she didn’t.

She just stood there.

And in that small, ordinary moment, something inside her seemed to loosen.

The world outside kept going (cars passing, birds calling, the sun slowly sinking lower) but for a few quiet minutes, she allowed herself to simply exist inside the pause.
