These fun and easy backyard water games only require a few supplies. Use what you have!

1. Sponge Toss

Supplies:

  1. Players work in pairs, standing 10-15 feet apart (increase the distance for older kids or adults).
  2. Place a bucket of full water by one player. Place an empty bucket by the other player.
  3. The player next to the full bucket dunks the sponge, soaking up as much water as possible.
  4. The player then tosses the sponge to their teammate who wrings out the sponge into the bucket trying to get as much water as possible to fill the bucket.
  5. This player then runs or tosses the sponge back to the partner to repeat the process.
  6. The first team to fill up their bucket to the marked line wins. Alternatively, the team that has the fullest bucket when the time is up wins.

2. Sponge Run

  1. Place a bucket full of water on one side of the yard and an empty bucket on the other.
  2. Give a sponge to each player and have them stand by the full bucket of water.
  3. Players dunk the sponge in the water trying to soak up as much water as possible.
  4. The players put the sponge on their heads and hold it there while running to the empty bucket, trying to keep as much water as possible in it.
  5. Players wring out their sponges into the empty bucket and run back, continuing until someone reaches the mark on the empty bucket.
  6. The first person to fill up their bucket to the marked line wins.

Optional challenge: Players must balance the sponges on their heads while walking to the bucket without holding them. If a player drops the sponge, they return to the filling station to start again.
