Easy Minute To Win It Olympic-Themed Games For Kids

1. Penguin Run Race

Supplies:

  • Paper towel roll
  • Two cans or cups to flip
  1. Set up two cans or cups (or any two objects) 15 feet apart.
  2. Place the paper towel roll between your knees and hold it there.
  3. Waddle as quickly as you can from the starting object to the ending object, keeping the paper towel roll between your knees. When you reach the end, flip over the object, turn around, and waddle back to the starting object. Flip over the object at each end every time.
  4. If you drop the paper towel roll, do 10 jumping jacks, and then start again.
  5. The player who completes the most laps in one minute wins!

2. Speed Skating

Supplies:

  • plastic traffic cones (or any objects you have)
  • two kitchen towels
  1. Arrange the plastic traffic cones in a circle around the room.
  2. Give each player two kitchen towels to use as “skates.”
  3. Have players start at a designated point on the circle. Players must use the kitchen towels to slide their feet, “skating” around the circle. And weaving in and out of each cone.
  4. If a player misses any cone, they must go back and navigate through the missed cone before continuing.
  5. The fastest player to skate around the entire circle within the minute (passing through every cone) wins!

3. Table Tennis Topple

Supplies:

  1. Set up the plastic cups at the end of a table spacing each one about 2 inches apart.
  2. Place a basket of ping pong balls at the opposite end of the table.
  3. Players stand at the end of the table with the ping pong balls. Each player has one minute to roll (not bounce or throw) the ping pong balls across the table aiming to knock the cups off the other side.
  4. The player who knocks the most cups completely off the table after the minute is the winner!

4. Bouncing Basketball

Supplies:

  • Ping pong balls
  • Small round trash can or bucket
  • 1 blown up balloon

Option #1

  1. Place a small trash basket or bucket in the center of a room with non-carpet floors.
  2. Have players stand 5-10 feet away from the basket.
  3. Each player has 1 minute to bounce their ping pong balls into the trash can. Players get one point for each ball in the basket at the end of the minute. The player with the most is the winner.

Option #2

  1. Place the ping pong balls on the floor close to the basket or bucket.
  2. The player must get as many ping pong balls into the basket as possible while simultaneously keeping a balloon in the air and from hitting the ground.
  3. The player with the most balls in the basket at the end of a minute is the winner.
  4. Make this more challenging by making a box with tape on the floor that the player must stay within while playing.

5. Balance Walk

Supplies:

  • Tape for a line on the floor
  • 1-3 books of the same size

  1. Tape a 10-foot line on the floor. This is the balance beam.
  2. Players walk from one end of the tape to the other (without falling off) while balancing a book on their heads. If the book falls off or they step off the line, the player starts over. Players earn one point each time they walk the entire length of the tape without errors.
  3. The player continues to walk until the minute is up. The player with the most points is the winner.

Make it more challenging: Each additional book the player manages to balance on his/her head (and walk the entire length of the tape) earns one additional point.

6. Rug Run

Supplies:

  • Bath mat or towel
  • Start and finish line on non-carpeted area
  1. Each player has one minute to sit on a bath mat and scootch their way from a starting line to the finish line and back again.
  2. The player who succeeds the most times in 60 seconds is the winner.

This game can also be played like a relay race in teams if there are more players.

7. Javelin Toss

Supplies:

  • Pool noodles, straws, or toothpicks
  • Hula hoops or tape to mark targets (use what you have!)
  1. Use pool noodles to see who can throw the farthest or hit a target first in one minute.
  2. Place a marker for the longest throw and let individuals continue to throw until their minute is up to try to get their farthest throw.
  3. The score can be based on the distance thrown or by the closest player to hit a target.

More Game-Play Supplies Options:

  • Pool Noodles: Cut pool noodles in half to make them shorter and easier to throw. These are great for larger targets and outdoor play.
  • Straws: Use straws for a lightweight and safe indoor throwing option. Perfect for aiming at smaller targets or creating a fun challenge.
  • Toothpicks: Use toothpicks aimed at a bowl for a more precise and challenging game.

8. Long Jump

  1. Draw a clear line in your grass or sand pit to designate the starting point.
  2. Instruct players to leap from a standing start, trying to jump as far as they can.
  3. Give each player one minute to make as many jumps as possible, aiming to achieve their longest distance.
  4. Measure and record the longest jump each player makes within the time limit.
  5. The player with the farthest jump at the end of the minute wins!

9. Rubber Band Archery

Supplies:

  • Rubber bands
  • Paper target
  1. Mark a piece of paper for a target and have players stand about 8-10 feet away from the target.
  2. Each player has 60 seconds to hit the target with rubber bands.
  3. The player who hits the target closest within their minute wins!

*Discuss safety when using rubber bands! May not be suitable for younger kids.

10. Olympic Charades

Supplies: Charade cards

  1. Create a set of cards that has various Olympic events and phrases.
  2. Divide into two teams.
  3. Each team will designate who will act out the cards within one minute.
  4. The team with the most guesses wins. Remember, no words or clues are allowed – only pure acting!

11. Hot Shot Basketball Challenge

  1. Players compete to see who can make the most baskets in 1 minute.
  2. If you don’t have a basketball hoop, use a smaller ball and a garbage can or basket. Require participants to stand a certain distance from the garbage can.

12. Triathlon

Combine any three tasks of your choice into a simple triathlon event.

  • Football (toss a small football through a hula hoop)
  • Basketball (toss a ball into a laundry basket or hoop)
  • Soccer (kick a ball through a goal).
  • Sprint to a designated spot and back.
  • Complete a small obstacle course.

Time participants, and the fastest time under the minute wins!

13. Oreo Curling

Supplies:

  • Oreos
  • Tape
  1. Use tape or markers to create a target area on the surface. This can be a series of concentric circles, like a bullseye, or a single designated spot.
  2. Place a strip of tape or a marker to indicate the starting line from which players will slide their Oreos.
  3. Have players stand behind the starting line with their Oreos ready.
  4. Players take turns sliding their Oreos from the line toward the target area, aiming to land as close to the center as possible.
  5. Assign points to different zones of the target. The closer the Oreeo lands to the center of the target, the higher the score.
  6. Each round only lasts for 1 minute, so slide quickly!

14. Water Cup Relay

Supplies:

  • Two buckets per team
  • Plastic cups
  • Water
  1. Place two buckets (one filled with water and one empty) for each team 15-20 feet apart (or more if you have older kids).
  2. The first player must use a cup to scoop up water from the first bucket, place it on his/her head (they can still hold it with their hands), and run to dump it in the second (empty) bucket. Then, the runner returns to the team and hands off the cup to the next person.
  3. Play continues until one team fills their second bucket ALL the way to the top or the minute is up.

15. Chalk Targets

Supplies:

  1. Draw targets with point values using chalk. Create a bullseye, with higher points in the center, decreasing outward. Or draw various sized shapes randomly, each assigned different point values.
  2. Play individually or in teams. Take turns throwing a beanbag from the line to the targets. Keep score based on where the beanbag lands.
  3. The team or individual with the highest score in the minute wins.

Bonus Points: Set up two or three throwing lines. The closest offers normal points, the next further back gives double points, and the furthest provides triple points, allowing players to risk more for higher scores.

16. Discus Throw

Supplies:

  • A frisbee
  • A measuring tape or markers for distance
  • A large open space (like a park or field)
  • Cones or markers to define the throwing area
  1. Designate a throwing circle or area where players will stand to throw the frisbee. Use cones or markers to outline this area.
  2. Have the first player stand within the designated throwing area with the frisbee.
  3. The player must throw the frisbee using a discus-style throw, which involves spinning and releasing the frisbee with a sweeping motion.
    • Technique: Hold the frisbee flat in your throwing hand. Spin your body (usually counterclockwise for right-handed throwers) to build momentum, then release the frisbee at the end of the spin.
  4. Each player can throw as many times as they can within the minute.
  5. The player with the longest throw wins the game.

17. Cup Fencing

Supplies: Plastic cups

  1. Players stand in a circle.
  2. Each player balances a plastic cup on top of their head.
  3. Once the minute timer starts, each player must balance and protect the cup on their head while attempting to knock off other players’ cups.
  4. The last player with their cup still balanced on their head wins the round!

18. Cup Gymnastics

Supplies: Plastic cups

  1. Players sit on the floor and balance a cup on their heads.
  2. Without holding onto their cup or using their hands, players must stand up while keeping the cup balanced on top of their heads.
  3. The first player to successfully accomplish this within the minute is the winner.

19. Balloon Volleyball

Supplies: Balloons

  1. This can be played individually or in pairs. Players keep a balloon afloat for one minute using only volleyball bumps or sets. Determine ahead of time what will be counted as a correct volleyball hit.
  2. Each correct volleyball hit is counted as one point.
  3. The player with the most points after the minute is up is the winner.

20. Exercise Challenge

Participants aim to complete as many repetitions of a selected exercise as possible within one minute. This is a great opportunity for movement and a burst of energy release!
