How to Play the Christmas Dice Gift Exchange Game

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Have each player bring a wrapped gift (set a price limit ahead of time).

2. Players sit in a circle, each holding their gift.

3. Place the printable game board in the center so everyone can see it clearly.

4. Use two dice to play.

  • One die is used to choose the ROW
  • The other die is used to choose the COLUMN

Helpful Dice Tip: Using two different-colored dice makes the game much easier to follow. Decide at the start which color is for the rows and which is for the columns. If both dice are white, simply mark one with a marker, sticker, or small piece of tape so everyone can quickly tell which die is which before playing.

5. Decide how many rounds you’ll play (or set a timer and keep rolling until it buzzes!).

6. The youngest player rolls first. Then play continues clockwise.

7. On each turn, the player:

  • Rolls both dice
  • Uses the first die to find the row
  • Uses the second die to find the column
  • Follows the action where that row and column meet on the game board

8. Play continues with players swapping, stealing, passing, and completing silly Christmas challenges.

9. When the final round ends, everyone keeps the gift they’re holding!

There’s no wrong way to play. Just decide on your dice system at the beginning and stick with it.

  1. Does it matter which action you do? Say you roll a 3 and a 5….which do you do first etc?

    1. Hi Fiona! There’s no wrong way to play 😊 We like to use two different-colored dice. One die for the row and one die for the column. Roll both dice, then use the numbers together to find the square. If your group ever rolls and isn’t sure what to do first, just pick a method and stick with it. Whatever works for your group is perfect! I’ve updated the post to make the instructions more clear! Thanks!

  2. Not understanding completely-on each roll you do two things. Do you mark them on the bingo card and go to the next or do you chose an action from that row? Do you go right on the card or down?

    1. Hi Tammy! Thanks so much for asking!😊 You roll both dice at the same time. One die tells you the row, and the other tells you the column. Then you follow the single action where that row and column meet on the game board. You don’t mark anything on the card. Just do the action and keep playing. We’ve updated the post with clearer directions and a dice tip to make this easier to follow. Thanks again for helping us improve it!
