My husband and I have always been very different people.

He likes to stay up late. I don’t.

I like to take ridiculously long showers. He doesn’t.

I get fired up. He cools down a situation.

But there’s been one defining moment in our marriage that made me realize just how much we differ.

Years ago, we moved into our current home. We moved in the spring, and the selling point was that it was close to a creek and trail.

Except. What I didn’t realize at the time, was that the creek meant snakes.

And for whatever reason, that first summer, we saw them everywhere. And big ones too. Sunning their gigantic bodies on rocks.

Being a city girl, I was a bit freaked out. But I’m also a bit of a prankster. So, one day, I found a fake snake and put it in our bed (on my hubby’s side).

I’ll never forget what happened next.

He lifted the covers. Found the snake. And…

screamed

jumped

ran away like killer bees were chasing him

He did none of these things. Instead, the man sighed. As if getting a snake out of his bed was just one more thing on his long to-do list.

I watched him with my mouth gaping open.

(Because, I’m sorry, but if I found a REAL snake in my bed, we’d be moving to a different state.)

I realized then that there are so many facets to a person.

Some facets are like you. Some are wildly different. And when it comes to your partner, you learn new things about them even years later.

It’s what makes the whole ride interesting.
