One of my all-time favorite stories is about the British cycling team from 2007-2017.
Before this time, they endured a hundred years of bad results. (In fact, one of the top bike manufacturers in Europe refused to sell to them, in fear that it would hurt their sales)
Then, suddenly, in 2008, the British cycling team dominated the Beijing Olympics. They won an astonishing 60 percent of the gold medals available that year, went on to set records in the London Olympics, and won five Tour de France victories in six years.
How the heck did this happen?
It turns out, one tiny step at a time. Because in 2003 the British team hired a new Performance Director. This new coach’s philosophy was
“if you break down everything you could think of that goes into biking, and then improve it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.”
He didn’t stop at the obvious either, like bike seats and clothing. He searched for overlooked and unexpected ways. He tested massage gels and even taught athletes to better wash their hands.
Pretty unbelievable, right?
1% gains took a team from mediocre to dominant. In the span of five years.
Just think of what this concept could do for your health. Your happiness. Or any other area you’d like to improve.
