How To Play The Left Right Story Game
Materials Needed:
- A group of 4 or more people
- Left-Right Christmas printable story
- Wrapped gifts, prizes, or objects to pass (see the ideas below)
1. Have participants stand in a circle each holding a wrapped gift. For larger groups, consider dividing into two or more circles.
2. The narrator reads the Christmas Left Right story aloud. Whenever you hear the word “left,” pass your gift to the person on your left. And when you hear the word “right,” pass your gift to the right.
Pro Tip: Emphasize the words “left” and “right” as you read the story aloud. It ensures participants know clearly when to pass their gift!
4. Continue reading the story while participants pass the gifts.
5. By the end of the story, everyone unwraps the gift they’re holding and keeps it!

More Creative Ideas For The Christmas Left-Right Game
While this is traditionally a gift-passing game, use any variation to add excitement and tailor this game for your Christmas party.
- Give each participant a sweet Christmas treat before reading the story (use a variety!). When the game is over, everyone will be holding a treat to enjoy.
- Before starting, give two to three players a small gift or Christmas ornament. These items will continue to be passed among participants until the story ends. The participants holding the items win the door prize.
- Kick off the game by placing a Santa hat on one or two players. As the story unfolds, the hat is passed and worn by each participant according to the left/right directions. The person wearing the hat at the game’s conclusion gets to keep it.

- Use the left-right story game to make partners or teams for team-building activities. Every player gets a colored marker or object. Players pass throughout the game and then match up with the person(s) holding the same object to partner with for the next activity.
