How To Play The Left Right Story Game

Materials Needed:

  • A group of 4 or more people
  • Left-Right 4th of July printable story
  • A small prize or object to pass (see the ideas below)

1. Have participants stand in a circle. For larger groups, consider dividing into two or more circles to ensure everyone can participate and enjoy the game.

2. Give the prize or object to one participant in each group to start.

3. The narrator reads the 4th of July Left Right story aloud. Each time the word “left” is mentioned, the person holding the object passes it to their left. Each time the word “right” is mentioned, they pass it to their right.

Pro Tip: Emphasize the words “left” and “right” as you read the story aloud. It ensures participants know clearly when to pass the object!

4. Continue reading the story while participants pass the object.

5. Whoever is holding the object at the end of the story wins the prize!

More Ideas For The Left-Right Game

While this is traditionally a gift-passing game, use any variation to add excitement and tailor this game for your 4th of July celebration.

  • Give all participants a small candy bar before reading the story (use a variety!). When the game is over, everyone will be holding a sweet treat to enjoy.
  • Before starting, give one player a small flag or pinwheel. This festive item will continue to be passed among participants until the story ends. The person holding the item wins the door prize.
  • Kick off the game by placing an Uncle Sam hat on one player. As the story unfolds, the hat is passed and worn by each participant according to the left/right directions. The person wearing the hat at the game’s conclusion gets to keep it as a festive memento.
  • Use the left-right story game to make partners or teams for team-building activities. Every player gets a colored marker or object. Players pass throughout the game and then match up with the person(s) holding the same object to partner with for the next activity.

4th of July Left Right Game Prize Ideas

Everyone can end the game with a small prize in their hand, or you can have one prize winner.

Prizes are optional in this game! Instead of a traditional prize, the winner could choose the first firework to light up the night sky, be the first to indulge in dessert, or gain another special privilege during the celebration.
