Day 6: Laundry Room & Linen Decluttering Hacks
1. Toss Expired Products
Go through detergents, fabric softeners, stain removers, and other cleaning products. Toss anything expired, nearly empty, or that you no longer use.
Stick to multipurpose or frequently used items to free up space.
Pro Tip: Opened liquid laundry detergent should be used within 6 months for best results (source). Powder laundry detergents do not expire or lose efficacy if stored properly in a cool, dry place and kept dry.
2. Create Zones For Efficiency
- Designate areas for sorting, washing, drying, and folding
- Use bins or baskets for categories like delicates, whites, and colors to streamline the process.
3. Maximize Vertical Space
- Install shelves, hooks, or wall-mounted organizers for items like lint rollers, laundry bags, and spray bottles.
- Use over-the-door racks for detergents or cleaning tools to free up counter or floor space.
4. Get Rid Of The Extras
Pare down mismatched or damaged hangers, old laundry baskets, and single socks. If you haven’t used it in months (like that iron you never plug in), consider donating.
Limit yourself to two sets of sheets and towels per person (plus a spare or two for guests). Donate or repurpose extras that are mismatched, worn, or unused.
Pro Tip: Fold sheets, pillowcases, and matching items together and store them in a pillowcase from the set. This keeps everything organized and easy to grab without rummaging.
5. Use Space-Saving Tools
Store out-of-season linens in vacuum-seal bags to free up space in closets or drawers. Use dividers or baskets to separate towels, sheets, and table linens.
